Riding along the West coast of Peru looking at the Pacific Ocean brings back good memory while working on board ship. Good to see the Ocean again. The Big bird in the picture was so friendly as I took his pic close-up; did he smells an old sailor? Hehe.

Yet again riding in the semi arid desert rules this part of my route on the Panamerica Sur (South America Highway). Alas! I met my dear Italian friend riding his Vespa on the same destination. "Tony" is a role model for anyone who loves adventure motorcycle. Not the bike but the rider!

Day 10: Lima to Ica

Another long desert riding day with occasional gusty wind blowing fine sand all over. I recalled Peru is just like the Philippines; the horrible traffic, the mototaxis, the food, rural houses and the agriculture products. The people differ though.

I had a short break for Rajos too.Traffic is mainly dominates by heavy trucks and double-decker buses. They just zoom past me. On a brighter side, it is a free toll for motorbikes. There are signed of new construction over this stretch of the Pan American Highway.

Just after Lima city along the long stretch of the Pacific coast, there are lots of newly build apartments and condominiums. Yet another sign of foreign investments and property boom.

Day 1 (28/1/12) Cali to Pasto

* Riding duration 10 hr, RnR inclusive.
* After Popayan ride along ridge of the Andes
* The Andes - volcanic features with river flows in valley
* O/nite in Pasto

Day 2 Pasto to Otvalo

* Border crossing Colombia into Ecuador
* Before cross border visit Las Lajas Church. The church built between gorges.
* Border cross took 2 hrs. No charges. Colombian Custom (Aduana) helped me with a written statement to Ecuador Custom.
* Good, long winding road along ridge of the Andes
* Speedometer broke
* O/nite Otvalo

Day 3 Otvalo to Quito

* Visit Otvalo market. Many local stuff there.
* Another long winding road towards Quito.
* O/nite at Secret Garden hostel in Quito old town

Day 4 Quito to El Bamba

* Long winding road
* Rain and foggy; limited visibility
* Many heavy vehicles
* Average height 1000m above sea level
* Cold
* O/nite El Bamba

Day 5 El Bamba to Santa Rosa

* Long winding road
* Heavy fog and rain
* Gravel road
* Took 2 and half hour to cover 70km!
* Very taxing ride

Day 6 Santa Rosa to Zorritos

Border crossing Ecuador into Peru . At Huaquillas Ecuador, stamp passport out Ecuador at Huaquallis town. Their computer failed waited 2 hrs to clear immigration. Bus passengers dominated the long queue.Then back track some 3 km away from Huaquallis immigration office to hand over motor temporary import permit to Ecuador Custom. Just hand over, then you can go.

Ecuador immigration and custom new building not open yet. This is a big blue building. Ride between new Ecuador check point office (not open yet) into Peru where you will stop at the police road block. They will guide you to their temporary Immigration and Custom container type office.Their check point office like Ecuador is not open yet.

At the temporary office, stamp in passport at the immigration counter. They will ask you to fill up form. Use your common sense to fill the column. If wrong they will correct you. They gave me 30 days to stay. Then get the bike temp import permit. Get insurance SOAT from the make shift counter next door. One month insurance cost me USD 35. After all done, you free to enter Peru. All these took me 3 hour.

Ride into Zorritos and overnight in a hostal by the beach facing the Pacific Ocean. Good place to rest and do some maintenance works. Walk along the beach is very relaxing.

Day 7 Zorritos to Chiclayo

* Passing Sechura Desert
* 2 types of physical vegetation . First the mud type desert; very brown. Second the sand type very white and strong wind blow (approx 30 kph)
* Very long straight road makes you bored
* Just nothing but empty only some donkeys
* Traffic medium - trucks and express buses
* O/nite Chiclayo at Hostal Paraiso

Day 8 Chiclayo to Chao

* Still across the semi desert area to Trijillo.
* Visit Chan Chan - Historical site
* Visit the Mochae pyramids
* O/nite at small town called Chao.

Day 9 Chao to Lima

* Another long winding semi desert ride
* Still passing desert region along the West coast of Peru facing the Pacific Ocean.
* Strong gusty wind blowing fine sand across my path.
* Its bright sunny day but foggy along the high plateau and cool temperature.
* The long winding road, up and down is boring ride but stunning view!

More bikers called at the hostel where I stay in Cali. All size and shape. This is one happy crazy people who shared the same passion - adventure ride with motorcycle.
I also found out that local fruit sellers are on push-cart selling Colombian local fruits. Most the first time I have seen and taste. Along the Route 25 PanAm highway at this part the road is just flat and well paved. Once awhile you see lorry towed a 5 container load of sugar cane towards the refineries. What a sight.

Day 8 - Day 13 (17th till 22nd Jan 2012)

Test run towards Bogota on a sunny day. Along Ruta (Route) N25 was fun indeed. The bike works fine and cruising at legal speed limit (100 kph) along this PanAmerican stretch was no problem. But you get bored quickly along this highway. I decided to get into the secondary road which alot more thrilling. Bends, slopes and potholes!
Along mid-day I arrived a town called Armenia. This is one of the many coffee plantation towns - the popular Colombian coffee. I had a cuppa there. It is just awesome.
My first impression of Colombia in terms country"s physical landscape, the vegetation and agriculture products can be summarised as quite similar to Mindanao. The land is very fertile.
On my return journey to Cali, it rained almost all the way but the test run is assessed as very successful with only few things to make good; head lamp bulb blew and a mul-fuction GPS power connecter.

D-Day + 1 till 7 - Flight from London to Madrid to Cali, Colombia.

Arrived London for some administrative preparation. Weather in London as usual can be described in a single word - sucks! Flight to Cali was from London - Madrid - Cali, Colombia. At Madrid, Aviancia flight to Cali check-in counter I was almost refused on board because the official said I do not have visa! The argument was the duration between my entry into Colombia and departure Colombia exceeds the 90 days tourist visa policy as set by the Colombian Immigration. Aiya!

Despite a lengthy explanation about my trip that official simply do not understand and asked me to buy a new return ticket that meet the 90 days policy. I argued to see the supervisor and the official did present to their supervisor about the situation and return to say " You OK to go".

What do I think about Cali?

Cali is a nice city. There are obviously many new buildings and contemporary structures and designs overtaking the Cali Old City. The best way to see the city is by walking along the streets passing many cafes serve typical Colombian coffee. Under USD $2 you get a 'kick' cup of coffee. The streets are lined with many old trees providing shades to pedestrian walkway and traffics.

Two points illustrate the people in Cali or Colombian as a whole. The male are just stunning. The women, big boops and wide butts. Hehe!

Kaabah Direction

I want to share this information with you, if you have not find it before. During our riding we constantly looking for the direction of the Kaabah (Qibla) to pray. Much easy in Malaysia or within this region as the basic rule applies - look for the direction of sunset i,e almost Westerly direction. Bring yourself a compass, it helps.
If you are looking for Qibla direction from a PC, you must first have an internet connection. Follow these steps:

1. Go to http://www.qiblalocator.com

2. Enter city or your position Lat and Long , you see your actual location

3. Locate your existing position or house

4. You will find a (+) sign in middle of the page. Put the centre of this sign above your existing location/house

5. You will find a RED LINE starting from the centre of the (+) sign and end at the Kaabah

6. This line is your Qibla Direction

When you are planning your route, do this at your would be stop over places. You know Kaabah direction well ahead.

Its year end again. My travelling episode this year has brought me covering few countries; The South East Asia ride in the early part of 2011, New Zealand somewhere in mid of the year, few trips to Thailand at the 3rd quarter of 2011 and finally Indonesia in December this year. The Bike KLR 650 (I called it CAMEL) has been great through out. Merit to its popular codename Mr Can Do All. Sadly or not, in Malaysia this is not a popular bike compared to countries like the US, Canada, Australia and some parts of Europe.
I thank God for my health and safety during this whole year. Insyallah, next year the adventure ride continues starting 10 Jan 2012 on the South America Tour.

News update - Yellow Fever vaccination. I went to a Military Hospital inside the Naval Base in Lumut recently to ask for this vaccination. Apparently they have no stock available and best get from private clinic, I was told. So, I went to Klinik Samudera, Sitiawan ( a panel doctor for Malaysian Seaferers) and the doctor refers me to Medical Centre in Ipoh.
So, for those of you live in Perak, the only place you could get Yellow Fever and other vaccinations is at Klinik Kesihatan at Jelapang, Ipoh , Perak. Bring your I.D and international Passport, the fee is RM 90.
KLR spare parts. I have placed an order for the following parts;
* Front and back tire tubes
* Brake pads
* Fuses
* Accelerator cables
* Clutch cable
* Bulbs
* Tire repair kits
* Plugs

Some basic tools I have got and these items will make for a huge weight and space for my total luggage. Let see how many more under wears I have to leave behind! Riding with without one is not a good idea especially when you have to endure some off-road condition.

The South America Tour top my list now and basic preparation is currently underway. The plan is simple; take a flight to Colombia, South America, buy a bike there and ride down towards Ushuaia, Argentina make a bout turn and return to Colombia. Sell the bike and take a return flight home.
The route will cover; Colombia - Ecuador - Peru - Chile - Argentina - Chile - Argentina - Chile - Argentina - Bolivia - Peru - Ecuador - Colombia. I estimated the total distance about 14062 km and time taken about 4 months.
The bike is KLR 650, Colombian registered.
As of today I am making appointment with a doctor to get a Yellow Fever vaccination. This is a must to enter Colombia. A certificate of prove is required. Maps and GPS checked but a compass is my basic instrument for navigation. My complete list of items to check and take follows in next article.

Mal/Thai Border-Crossing

You can find many write-up about this topic in other references and articles, and this may be a review for those who have known about it but from another perspective. Let me say this from the beginning, in any border-crossing, each of them is different and unique because the officials dealing with you are different person all the time. So what? So, always prepare to encounter with tough situation, allow about 4 hours of border-cross and smile from ear to ear. If luck is with you or you are such a beautiful girl or handsome enough man the chance are you get pass quickly, then it is considered a bonus. Or else stick to my basic rules.
At the time of writing, there are 6 legal Mal/Thai Border cross points. All accessible by motorbike and car. They are, Pasir Panjang/Sg Kolok; Bukit Berapit/Betong; Bukit Kayu Hitam/Danok; Padang Besar; Wang Klian/Wang Prachap and a newly open near Padang Terap (Malaysian side).
If you intend to travel from Malaysia to Thailand or reverse in the Eastern part of both countries, then your choice will be limited to Pasir Panjang/Sg Kolok, Bukit Berapit/Betong and the newly open points.
Some of the observations at each of the check points are:

Pasir Panjang/Sg Kolok

* The Custom office on the Thai side is newly build and the counters are not yet operational
* You have to use the pedestrian counter to stamp your international passport
* There is no insurance agents office on the Thai side. You need to go to next nearest town, Yala or Takbai.
* RM2 insert in your passport as you get it stamp. The official just ask if you forget. Dont do on the Malaysian side, you offend the officials.

Bukit Berapit/Betong

* On the Malaysian side, the nearest town is Pengkalan Hulu. Get your requirement here. There is nothing at the border point of the Malaysia side.
* The check point on Thai side is a huge building and newly build. Betong is about 6 km from the check point.
* RM 2 each for your passport and bike temporary import permit Thai side. No, on the Malaysian side.

Bukit Kayu Hitam/Danok

* The popular and well established border points on both side.
* Avoid weekend and holidays as you may have to get into a long queue with other traffics
* RM 1 for immigration on the Thai side. Not on the Malaysian side.

Padang Besar Border Cross

* Used to be the main entry point between the two countries before the Bukit Kayu Hitam/Danok point was opened.
* The Railway line linking both countries pass trough these check points.

Wang Klian/Wang Prachap

* The road leading towards Wang Prachap check point from Satun, Thailand is still under construction.
* Satun to Wang Prachap check point is about 12 km.
* RM 2 each for Custom and Immigration on Thai side. Nothing on the Malaysian side.

Caution

Illegal possession of fire arms and drugs trafficking are serious offences in both countries.In Malaysia if found guilty it carries a mandatory death sentence. On each side of the countries after the border check points you will encounter with road blocks from the enforcement agencies.

One of the best part of North Island is their Geothermal features of the landscape. There I met an Old Kiwi guiding his fellow friends from OZ. He barely walk but with stick he proudly said "with 3 legs you go for miles. And getting out of the thermal pools make it tough isn't it? Tough nut he is.

One of the interesting thing about NZ is easy to go anywhere. From shoe-string to 5 stars budget you can be there and pick your itinerary. My experience tells me to spend more time in the South island than the North. Why? In my opinion, South Island offers many natural activities to be explored, remote and 'slightly cooler'.

As we cross the Cook Strait towards North Island, the weather gets chilly. In the early morning its already single digit. Walking along the beach of Kaikoura in the wee morning was just breathtaking! Beautiful sunrise, sound of silence only the rushing waves and cold. After a short stroll, returning to the motel and have a big breakfast with hot Long Black is just no word to describe "What a feeling"...the adventure continues.

57th Birthday

Dear friends,its my 57th years birthday tomorrow. How things fly and how far I have gone through all these years. One may asked, how you feel being 57? The quick reply will be Its Great!. There are things in my life that I have done which did not match up with what I planned. Faith.
One thing I want to share with you is that never give up on God. He is there always for you though whatever you asked may not be achieved now but later at his will because he knows best what good for you.
What next? As I walk through this age, what struck me is to preach what the Prophet Mohammad (peace Upon Him) has taught be it in a small way. Pick the easiest that I can do. Let see.
This weekend (18 March 2011), I will be joining friends to do a 24 hour ride ( commonly known as Butt Ride) starting and finish at a popular tourist town called Port Dickson, Malaysia . We called it The Enduro Malaysia Chapter (EMC). Please visit Enduro Malaysia Chapter.com for more information.

Dont miss the old market place, that what most people say. I did the same. Wah! too many things to see in the market. Varied smell, sound and sight. I like the food section. Bought book, map, baseball cap.
Went to see the Tonle Sap region. Some 15 km from Siem reap.
Later ride Siem Reap to Poipet then cross border into Thailand at Pranyaphratep.
Before crossing the border, stop for Friday prayer at Sisophone, Laos
Border cross into Thailand;
First stamp out passport from Laos Immigration
Second, I check with the custom post, show to the custom officer my passport and bike registration document. He noticed I am a Malaysian and said you free to pass through. Just like that.
As I entered Thailand side, same routine repeat.
First, fill up arrival slip get your passport stamp
Second, go to the custom post, show passport and bike document. The Custom will prepare and give you the temporary import/export document, you sign an appropriate part and off you enter Thailand.
The geography on this part of Thailand (Aranyaphratep to Samut Prakan) is mainly dominated with forest land (special wood, gerharu etc)

Park bike before Immigration post. Many helpers willing to show you which and where Immigration and Custom buildings but for a fee.
Stamp out Thailand departure immigration slip
Move to the Custom post, deliver the temporary export/import document
Ride to the Cambodia Immigration and Custom building side
Write your entry slip and get passport stamp
Go to the Custom and ask for export/import document. Show bike document and passport. They will not give you anything but just say you can go now. I asked for stamp on my bike photocopy registration document but they refuse. Reason,the bike Kawasaki, is Japan manufactured vehicle. Since Cambodia and Japan do not have trade agreement therefore no official stamp can be endorsed on the document of the bike. Funny and confuse answer. Dont get smart, if they say you can go, just ride on. But I did asked for reference just to be on the safe side when I leave Cambodia later. The custom officer gave his name and mobile number, which I considered good enough to answer any enquiries later.
Welcome to Cambodia! Read many fearful stories during the reign of the old regime in the 70s. First 60km dirt road. Lorries and trucks are king here. Maximum safe speed is just 80 kph; above that you nearing to kiss the dirt. Once beaten twice shy in my case.
Enter the Angkor Wat through this route is not adviseable because you need to buy ticket at the main registration booth in Seam Reap. Get a 2 days ticket for US20 is the best to explore the Angkor Wat and the surrounding attractions. I just got the US 20 day ticket.
The Angkor Wat and its attraction is visited for their architecture and artistic value of the 10-12 century built. Seam Reap in my mind is famous because of that heritage , no more.

The landing site, immigration and custom posts are locate near the Mekong river across the road is the Riveria hotel.
First, stamp out your passport at the Immigration post
Second, return temporary import/export papers to the custom
Third, ride towards the ferry ramp. You may be called by the ferry operators to move infront of other waiting vehicles (mostly lorries and trucks). This is not passengers ferry.
When directed, ride on the ferry barge. Pay 400 bahts to the ferry coxswain. I get 50% discount. Gary's staff (Miss Lei) who helped me out of the accident is the ferry owner's daughter, she asked her father to give rebate for me. How sweet.
I was the only one on the ferry during the river crossing.He he!
On the Thai side, ride up the ramp and park by the Custom and Immigration building.
First, fill up arrival slip and get passport stamp
Second, go around next door the same building, enter the custom office, show bike document and passport, they will do for you the temporary import/export vehicle documentation. No fee. One of the custom officer asked for my photos along the ride. He was so impressed. After providing all the custom document, the custom officer gave me a pack of cornflake as a gift and off I go.

Cool day start from Vientiane to Thakhek

The accident episode;

About 1230 hrs as I ride pass a village called Siong Hong, Hinbouh district, a group of 4 men wanting to cross the road,out of sudden one of them dashed out towards me and hit the bike left handle bar. He drop, limp and cross the other side of the road. From the rear mirror I saw him push on. I didn't stop fearing the villagers might wallop me. I continued my ride with a view to stop and make police report the next nearest town which is Thakhek (some 30 km away). Half way through there is a road block and the policemen stop me. I knew it, someone would have radio these policemen. Quickly one of them switch off the bike and took the ignition key and ask me to sit in one corner. Wah! here come trouble I said to myself. Be cool and remain composure. I text message my family in Malaysia.
Later, 2 pick-up trucks with 8 peoples came all curious and look at the bike. Some pointed out at the damages on the left fairing, and scratch on the left pannier which they believed impact from the accident. Wow! I didnt came down when the man hit the bike, it was from my previous slip at Kasi. None speak English so, it was like hen and duck. No communication.
It took 2 hours before they want me to go (via sign language) to the nearest police station under escort. At the local police station another hour of waiting for the local police to move and decide what to do. Eventually, they ask me to go to Thakhek police station for further investigation. Why all these stops, wait and see? I dont know.
In Thakhek police station, policemen and onlookers group and look at the bike. 6 policeman conduct Q and A. I was assisted by a local tourist guide who speaks little English. At the end of the investigation I was asked to sign the report. By now its almost sundown and the police tell me the investigation continue the next morning and want me to stay overnite in Thakhek. Since I dont have any refrence or guarantor, they took my international passport, driving license, bike registration, and insurance policy but allow me to keep the bike keys, The bike stay in the police station unlocked.
The police gave me 3 hotel choices; a Malayisan owned, a Vietnam or a local hotel. I choose the local hotel, the cheapest. The police drove me to the hotel. After shower and quick dinner I settled for the night not wanting to think about the accident. By midnight Gary Loh the Riveria Hotel Manager (Malaysian owned) hotel came-by. He was asked by the officer from the Malaysia Embassy in Vientiane to assist me dealing with the accident. Nice of him to come.
The next day, 2 police, Gary and one of his local staff and me went to the police station. There we waited for half an hour before we were told to visit the victim at the hospital. Apparently, the victim were admitted the day of the accident and was treated with 7 stitches on his head, a broken right arm and under right knew injury otherwise he is OK. I sat by his side and we smile at each other. He is in good spirit. By this time, the victim son, insurance agent, a policeman and Gary's staff were discussing about compensation.
In this country, if a motorist hit a pedestrian, the motorist is always wrong. 2 things to handle; the police and the victim. The police will impose penalty and the victim a compensation. First the police say, you pay 20 million KIPS the case is considered solve and you are free to go. What! 20 Million KIPS! Insurance will only pay less than 1 million KIPS (I insured for 1.2 Miilion KIPS). However,Gary advises his staff to bring down the sum. It went down to 13 Million then settled at 12.5 Million. I had to ask my family to credit some cash into my account so that I can withdraw them in Thakhek. Daily withdrawal is limited and I had to seek Gary help to make up the different. By the afternoon, we returned to the police station; the victim representative, me and Gary all sat in line surrounded by 5 policemen. Like a small courtroom. The senior policeman presides the proceeding and decides. I agree to pay compensation of 12.5 million KIPS to the victim; the money is handed over to the victim representative, he recounted and taken. I and the victim representative signed a settlement agreement in front of the senior policeman. Then, the police fine me 18,000 KIPS for traffic offences.I pay up, signed paper and they returned all my document and I am free to go.

Lesson learnt

1. Inform your Embassy and friends (if any) what, where, whither, when, how , why you are in this country
2. Make sure you have all legal document (license, insurance etc)
3. Stay calm and dont look worried
4. Get in touch with family and your nearest Embassy
5. Dont argue with the local authorities
6. Pay up and get back all your document and bike
7. Unless absolutely have to, dont discontinue your adventure; carry on
8. Think positive; if there is a will there is a way out of the thick situation

Border cross from Chiang Khong,Thailand to Houei Xai, Laos via ferry
Sort out passport first at the immigration, stamp out of Thailand.
Then, give back the temporary import/export paper you get from Sadao custom Thailand when first enter Thailand from Bukti Kayu Hitam Malaysia.
Chiang Khong custom say, you are clear to go cross border into Laos. No paper was given. I was confused. Last Malaysian bikers cross this border were given some papers. T took my chance to cross regardless.
Fee to cross by ferry 500 Baht. Pay at the ticket counter (a small shack on the right side of the ramp)before embark ferry and get into line to board. No worry the workers there will help and point out where and what to do.
Drop Camel here while trying to put down the side stand. It slippery ramp. Be careful,
The crossing took about 25 minutes roughly
Once across, park bike near a restaurant.
Sort out paper for the bike with Custom first. Counter 5 this time. Show passport and bike document. The Laos custom will give a permit to bring bike inside Laos. Stamp and get signed as directed by the Custom Officer.
Then get bike insurance. No worry, the insurance guy will always be there to follow you a n insist take their insurance. Take sufficient insurance days.
Then, ride toward passenger ferry terminal about 1 km away from where you land with the bike. Here the immigration post is located. Fill up entry Laos slip and get it stamp. All in order now, you are free to ride into Laos.

Day 31-44

At some point of your ride, there seem to be a day when nothing seems to work. As I entered France soil, the toll along the expressway really piss me off. Unlike Malaysia, motorcycle in France no gratis babe! Pulling out your wallet to pay toll at the booth hamper other traffics. Worse I cant understand what they say! You in the wrong lane dude. Get out there and reenter to the correct lane! What! You think it easy to make a u-turn with a 300kg bike?God knows how I manage. I managed though to get out the motorway and riding the national road was a peace of mind. Though some road are snowy and icy which was unexpected I did cover the "Mende Tour Bicycle" route. Very very nice countryside.
Entering Geneva from Pons de Ain along the lower Alps is such a wonderful and superb riding view. Geneve, very expensive and setting just like any German towns; lake surrounded by commercial buildings and hotels. Hamburg comes into mind.
Black Forest is not to be missed town. Visit the town square and see the sculptors along the church roof. You will notice out of the scary looking animals stone there stood a bum facing towards a pink painted house. I was told, the sculptor was not paid for his job, so his final craft was bum in protest for work done not paid!
Visit Praha next. Very beautiful city with very architectural and artistic buildings. By this time, the cold front started to catch me and every riding day is very freezing feeling and strong cold wind blast.
The ride from Praha to Berlin encountered very strong freezing wind all along. Though it was wet day as I entered Berlin from the Eastern side of the city, my previous experience to Berlin help greatly me find a pension house just at the outskirt of the city. Berlin just like Berlin. Few have changed I notice since 2003; the Railway station, Jews museum and the Berlin wall remnants rebuild for public viewing are all completed now.
Leaving behind Berlin, I continued West to Hamburg. First stop in Hamburg was No 96 Wolhdorfer Damm, a house I once lived. There I met Angelika and Harder. They were shocked to see me and very very glad indeed how we able to meet up again. The house stands well and look after. After 2 days looking around the familiar places I head for the Netherland via the Afslutdijk crossing to Den Helder. Freezing cold ride though the sun manages to emerge for awhile.
A day ride at this worse riding condition for me would not last more than 200km. Had to make many stops for the nite and during the day looking for toilets a worse nitemare I ever had! The weather turns for the worse from now on. Every day ride mostly wet, freezing temperature and strong wind. Passing central Den Haag I encountered heavy traffic and I decided to take the coastal route instead. It was a wrong decision. Over the bridge of Zieriksee to Terneuzen, I was basically blown off the bike. In order to stay upright, I have to spread both legs out, balancing in wild madness causing massive traffic jam behind me.Bet they curse me!
I get closer to Dover each day with similar riding condition. Stop at Dunkerque, look see and push ahead arriving Calais. Get into the ferry and cross the English Channel. That few hours onboard a good break for a short nap and leg stretch.
At Dover check point, the police stop me for questions.The standard QnAs. Had to open both panniers to show them what I carry. All clear and the ride to London was boring enough. M20 was heavy traffic! The rain and strong wind persist.
The next 2 days I get down to repair the broken left pannier, clean the bike and rest before final delivery of the bike to Bournemouth Motorcycle Hire Ltd, Bournemouth, Dorset, UK.

Day 45 - 60

Took a flight to from UK to the Netherlands and meet up family in Harderjik. There I changed my riding mode from motorcycle to bicycle. Exploring surrounding Harderjik is very interesting experience and different. In my mind, one day how about cycle the Netherland? This country have a myriad but developed bicycle tracks all over the entire country. I take note of this and a highly recommended adventure for everyone. Its cheap and easy.
By end of November 2010, the weather in Europe gets worse. Snow and very unexpected situation as it comes too early. Many airports closed operation and it cause me a bit of concern as my return flight to Malaysia is schedule on Dec 3, 2010. Any much later I may not be able to get home. Lucky for me, Stansted London Airport remains opened and I flew home as scheduled arriving Malaysia and home safely.
The adventure taught me how small we are and be grateful what you have. There are always people who are most willing to help you out from the problem you have at that time. As I looked back, I must thank to God how lucky I am to have been given the opportunity to see, smell, touch, hear and been to places I planned for. And thank to my family and friends who endlessly pray for my safe and well being always.

Europe Adventure Ride

On Oct 23,2010 arrived at Tarragonna, Spain. The next day Blackie stop and wouldn't start. Ho ho! Here comes problem. Hey! stay cool and get the UK AAA insurance work. Well, it does though take some phone calls and with difficulties trying to explain to the Spainish fellow what happened. It took 2 days to diagnose the problem ( wire connection to fuel intake broke). Then all back in good running condition.
Andorra state is not to be undercost when you stay there. It is a tourist town. You know what I mean isn't it? Crossing the Pyrenees is one of a heck dreadful experience. On the way up the long and winding road, two cars turn turtle and block half of the road. It was icy road, most campsites closed and find only me the single rider there! What a dude I am. Snow fall as I passed the mountain range. After many finger biting corners arrived Tarrasong Mcquir, the Pyrenees late afternoon.
Some tips controlling Blackie in the icy road:
1. Stay cool and calm
2. Reduce speed
3. Tug your legs firm to the tank while relax your handle grip
4. No sudden brake, instead try glide smoothly at your safe speed
5. Look ahead
6. If have to do, spread your legs out to balance (though looks ugly but it helps to stay upright)

Day 18 - 21
Sun is up! What a bright day to start a trip. Visit to Toledo and the oldest mosque in Spain. This is one heck of a beautiful country road I ever ride. Everywhere is rows of olive oil trees. They eat olive leaf with bread. A new trend , not with butter lah! The camp site at Mertolo near Cadiz is equally surrounded with olive trees.
20 Oct 2010, entered Portugal via Huelva. Moving along the countryside was such a beautiful sight; oilve on one side vineyard on the other. The ride along Rio Guadiana was really awesome.

Day +14 to +17

Crossing the Channel using the Eurotunnel is fast (under 1 hour) though expensive (37 Quids). The traffic was not unduly heavy at this time. You follow the direction indicated. If make mistake, no worry mate, someone will run by and correct you. I occupy a single carriage by myself. The staff there will keep you company if he is not too busy. It foggy and drizzling after the cross-over in French soil. Big sign everywhere DRIVE ON THE RIGHT SIDE. My thought was to get into Spain as quickly as possible. Not that I dont like France but better discover Spain early so as not get caught cold and unfriendly weather when I ride France on the upward journey later. So I choose the motorway, fast and easy but prepare for tolls. Many of them and considerably expensive too.

France is a big country.Everyday is a long hard ride for me. Cold and raining. Feet and fingers numb and stiff. Frequent stops and coffee break ease your body abit and awhile. Blackie has no heated grip the down side but she performed superb at an average speed of 130 kph. On 16 Oct, I entered Spain. Hello Senior n Senora! Rain persists.

Madrid here I come! Rain and more rain. I only weigh 58 kg but now 200 kg! All is wet now and pitching camp is out of question. Right?Hunting for hotel is best at outskirt of Madrid. There are plenty but depend what you willing to pay. Anything below 50 euro is within my budget with breakfast and parking space.

One of my objective to see Spain is to visit the past glory of the spread of Islam in this country. You know why its fall and what is today. Basically 2 main town to visit; Toledo and Cordoba. The Andulusia historical sites through the reign of the Roman, Moors and Christian left one stunning thing for you - ruin of rocks.

D-Day - 30 Sep 2010

Its 0300 (local) wake up call. Think abit of late but as I drove to Batu Gajah Rail Station so lucky the train delayed by 12 minutes, so not late after all. ETS travel time to KL Sentral took just over 2 hours. Very new, so everything look good and functioning. I hope Keretapi Tanah Melayu can keep up to that satndard and dont think too much about making profit lah! Where in this world rail transportation make profit? Its providing service! Connecting transport to KL LCCT was like riding the old MiniBus in KL. Zoom zoom here and there, short cut here and there. Was the driver an ex-......? Then the AirAsia flight to London Stansted. Wow! Full house. Pack like anything. Overall the filght rated as Satisfactory. Safely landed in the UK by half hour early.

UK Immigration typical questions, what are you doing in my country, how long you intend to stay, what is your job blah blah blah. Oh! I am retired and going to ride the UK and Europe. Oh! I see, have a nice tour. Off I exit the airport and my adventure really start now.

D+1 to +4

Rain rain and more rain. That the days news. Bought some riding items and a helmet and think I am all set. Contacted Bournemouth Motorcycle and further enquire about my previous booking of the motorcycle. Few snag here and there. Things look gloomy up North in Scotland as rain is forecasted the coming week. Not much to do except wait, furthermore its weekend. Still not wanting to waste time, managed to go to Oxford and area in vicinity Luton. Thanks to old classmates (Ng and Gooi) who are so kind to provide me with shelter and all the assisstance I needed.

D+5 to +13

At last! Suzuki VStrom DL650 is hired from Bournemouth Motorcycle Hire Ltd, 9 Soberton Road, Queens Park, Bournemouth Dorset BH8 9Bg. Its a family runs business. All their bikes well kept in a garage of their house. So dont expect a full flash shop. But they provide a very flexible yet practical conditions for hire. A 4-star rating.

Slowly the ride starts proceeding towards London and gradually Scotland Highland. Avoid the M roads. Too much traffics and tendency to race is always there. The A and country roads are where you should go. Passing through the English countryside, small 8 ft roads, lovely scenary and typical British villages. If you get lucky you might run over horse or cattle shit!

Get a glimpse of Southampton and try to locate the Solent Mariner Hotel where I once live there in 1977. The hotel is no longer there. But the the train station still standing strong with new make up and contemporary look. Well done that.

The weather took to the worse as progress Northerly direction. Rain rain again.

Morning very foggy and drizzling. In Edinburgh stop for look see round the city. Oop! I entered a road accessible for bus only. Ha ha! Stupid traveller. In St Andrew, there was Dunhill Link Championship going on. Free entrance, so stood at the 18th holes to watch. Not many big gunners I could recognise. Press on towards the Inverness via the coastal road, passing Dundee.

A82 along the Loch Ness is a motorbike suggested road if you want some actions. Winding and up and down road few yards along Loch Ness. Passing Loch Lomond then towards Wales.

The South Stacks in Holy Head give among the best view and not to be missed. Breathstaking view with continuous good road for motorcycling.

Milford Haven in the 80s and now have changed much. The dock area looks very tired and only small fishing boats and yatch marina activities occupy the harbour. The bustling activities of the maritime power once no longer the current feature of Milford.

Making a loop turn towards the East and proceeding towards Folkestone to cross the English Channel into mainland Europe.

Its a cool sunday morning when I start the day trip on a 'circums-navigate route' (Sitiawan-Kg Kayan-Kg Gajah-Degong-Ayer Kuning-Manir-Chenderiang-Lata Kinjang Waterfall-Kual Dipang-Jeram-Malim Nawar-Yg Tualang-Bali-Bota Kanan-Parit_Bruas-Sitiawan). Refer "Road Map& Highway Guide of Malaysia" 2009, Scale 1:915000.
There is always a feeling of freedom and satisfaction when you ride cruising at 80 - 100 kph. Though the traffic is not surprisingly high along the Sitiawan-Kg Kayan road, otherwise its smooth going. Well understood. Its sunday and most of all the Eid Fitr celebration just enter its 3rd day. Many Muslim still visiting relatives and friends at places while others take advantage of the long hols. Only idiot like me wander around during this festive season.What a dude!
The Perak Tengah Padi Estate funded by the World Bank is sure a sight not to be missed if you ride this area. You see nothing but padi padi as far as your horizon. Once you leave Perak Tengah district you enter Malaysian Kampong (village)where during this festive season most city folks return home to their kampongs. Typical sight, kampong house on stilts with big compound surrounded by trees all green and shady; Malaysia made car paraded in the compound. If they are abit 'up' you see Benz, Toyota, Honda and BMW.
Once upon a time I lived in a kampong called Chenderong Balai near Degong. Could not figure out where the house now as many have changed. One structure remain unchanged is the Degong Irrigation Dam ( we called it the 'Drop'). During those years this water catchment area was used as a 'mandi Safar ritual' celebration but was banned by the Government as this ritual is Kafr activity and unislamic.
First stop for cuppa and fuel was Temoh. Cold Alicafe augurs well in this hot day. After break, I took a wrong turn and was lost to find the short-cut to Chenderiang. One thing you must remember, ask the local. Dont trust your GPS as you are about to enter kampong roads, crossing someone backyard and possibly toilets and farm where you run over chickens and goats.
The Lata Kinjang Waterfall is noticeable from afar. It formed part of the Main Range of the Peninsular Malaysia I think. You can even see it on your right if you are travelling along the NS PLUS Highway North Bound at Km 300 just after the Tapah R&R. Carry on towards Kuala Dipang and to Jeram is the typical British Army road of the WW2 (8 ft wide, twisted among the hills and narrow). Close to Kual Dipang, I stopped to see an old school which is well kept to this day and still in used.
2nd stop for cuppa and lunch (Maggie mee) at Kg. Bali. Here Camel gets her shade. The areas surrounding Kg. Bali and Tg. Tualang were ex-tin mine area and what left today lakes which mostly uneconomical use though many beautifully covered with local water lilies. Not the case anymore, they are of many use after all. One such is Duck farm.
The final journey from Tg Tualang-Parit-Bruas-Sitiawan is uneventful. The day is drawing fast and dark clouds moving towards my route. Have to increase speed hoping the hols keep the cops away. Arrived home just after sunset and escape the rain behind me. Its has been a good day ride indeed.

In the evening, its feeding time for the 5 doggies; Joe, Maggie, silver, Brownie and blackie (not in pic rather shy). "Talking" to them is actually a wonderful experience never before I think of. Joe, the aggrasive one, Mag very childish, silver very attentive, Brownie playful and Blackie the shy one. What a character.
These are the African Barkless dog. They came, I feed and they stay.
Next is to train them to ride as pillion rider. Let see....

In early June 2010, 3 riders, 3 different type of motorcycles rode to South Johore from Kuala Lumpur. The centre piece of the ride was Meeting fellow bikers from Pahang in Johor. On the return leg, we stopped at some historical sites. The most important to share is the British WW2 Bunker along the Rompin primary road. Still strong and useable though looked very tired from the weather.

I have been silence for a long time. To open my blog the computer seems to need for a WD 40. Ho ho! Anyway, I am not at all forgotten about updating this blog. No reason but only have to say I am lazy as there are not much traveling stories to tell. You know what, over the span of 6 months ago I have been busy sorting out my small farm in Perak. Good excuse? You tell me.
As anxious as every biker preparing for a long trip, me no difference. Next month I will jump-start my RTW dream by covering the UK, Ireland and some parts of Europe. The rough plan is to tour Highland Scotland and Ireland before ride into France,Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Holland and back to UK b4 return to Malaysia.
Budget. This is always every rider Q n A. I estimated to spend about RM25K. Hmmm..quite on a high side? Dunno but I am going for a shoe-string budget.
Thats a short update to get me into second, third, fourth and fifth gear on my Camel. Wake up Camel, it riding time!!

Salam to all. Guess what, the Chinese New Year (Year of the Tiger) celebration has just passed us by. To my Chinese friends all over the world, may I wish you a belated Happy Chinese New Year. More good health and prosperity. As the electronic takes the place of snail mail, it was quite a job to get New Year cards to send!Alas! the snail mail still, in my mind rules the everlasting mode of remembering someone. So, keep the snail mail going yeah?

Back to travelling. Daily every morning I travel some 100km away from the busy capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, to a small hill side town called Kuala Kubu Bahru (KKB), at the foot of the Fraser hill resort, to attend the STCW class at the Pelita Academy. KKB,as glamorously called is an old British Army town during the Colonial days. The rows of shops remained the same; built in the 1940 plus. Passing through some thick undeveloped secondary forest and government toll lands, the early morning is always cool, fresh air and foggy. The winding roads to KKB make it more exciting to ride your bike. But, some stretch is quite undulating and marked with potholes. Worse, very often I find water buffaloes and herd of cattles lying on the road! You know why, the road provides warm temperature over the nite. I am going to miss this environment once my course is over. Safe ride.

After a year alone, Camel has found a new company the Red Spot (Honda CBR 929). Alas! Camel is for real long distance runner while Red Spot routine ride if you like. Salam to all. This year marks a new beginning of this travelling blog. The RTW prep for this year focuses on timeline and alternative routes. In general, on average I am phasing out the trip into various countries to be visited; i.e stay of within 3-4 weeks per country. That being the case, I will plan to cover 6 countries (Thai, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Iran and Turkey) in 6 months before entering Europe. For Europe it is passing through as quickly as possible before ending the 1st phase of the RTW in the UK.
BTW, I have add another "Camel" to my stable. The Red Sport. Honda CBR 929. A quick look below:

May I wish you all a belated Merry Christmas and next week a Happy New Year 2010. Yes, a year older for everyone and its getting nearer. You guess what I mean.Back to my main topic. On 12 Dec 09, I safely returned from Saudi Arabia. Guess what, after 44 days in the holy land, each time I pray the feeling of distance from Kaabah and sadness is difficult to mention. Of course the best part is to come home and life must go on.
28 Dec 09 - At Kelana Jaya, Kuala Lumpur we arrived before sundown,already the were huge crowds overflow the small waiting area. Families, relatives, friends waiting to bid farewell for their love ones. As though they never coming back again. It was drizzling that day. I met for the first time my room-mate to be .Mr Khalis Nasir or simply Pak Khalis. The rush hour to check-in was madness! Hey! Why push and jump line? Aiyo! Is this the normal way? Confused. Anyway, we finally get on the bus and we are on way to the airport. By 0100, the 747 took off and the journey begins.....

It has been a fairly long silence since I last wrote this blog. What can I say, I am busy with my pre-retirement training to get the STCW ticket. Actually it is back to basic; Port, Starboard, Rule of the Road and other seaman codes. As a seaman, you are difference. You learn the terrestial, maritime and celestial dimensions. Why all these back to training? Wow! good question. Simple answer, this is one of the thing I want to do after my retirement - continue study. The other being - travel. What new travel episode since last ride? On the 10th October, The Manjung Bikers Group organised a Merdeka Ride through the Manjung and Sitiawan Districts. Some 170 bikers joined. The Menteri Besar Perak and Menteri Perumahan graced the occasion. Successful it was and I would say Well Done to the organiser.
My next travel epic will be to Makkah for the Haj. Although under the Tabung Haji Malaysia, it must be a once in a life time experience. Stay tune for that stories. Cherio!

29 June 2009 Well, what can I say more about the adventure in Sabah Travel. From mountain climbing,jungle trekking (careful you may get lost), gravel road ride to under sea deep all in one. Or if you prefer to learn about Cocoa growing or some odds tropical forest history then this is the place. Im not selling Sabah but it just an awesome place to see. Ride Far Ride Safe.

Diving, scuba dive or snorkling. If your hobby is any one of these, then come to this part of the world. Five stars or shoe-string budget. And if your budget is either one of these, you can still enjoy your hobby here. All within reach. But if you dont envy any of these, then dont waste your time comming here. If you stay in any one of the island resorts be prepare to pay around RM1000 per person per nite. I think only two category of visitors will do that; first, somebody sponsor you and second, plain idiot. The best way is to stay in Semporna, in the mainland of Sabah(many cheap cheap motels), hire a qualified divers (also part and parcel of the motel arrangement)and go for daily trip to any of the selected islands. You can stay longer this way at a very resonable price. Most visiotrs select this option. Semporna is lively too during the nite. This is where the happening, so to speak. Come and see for yourself.
Alas! Pu Sipadan is only limited for day trip and only 150 person is allowed to visit per day. Registered early.

Tawau

This is Tawau. A small port but an important one in this part of Sabah. From air its just very green with patches of clearing and buildings mixed old and new ones. The Naval Base had its own stories to tell. Fresh fish and prawns from the wet market worth place to visit. You know why - cheap and fresh from the sea!

Hello there! The big C130 extended military aircraft finally landed at Tawau airport at the wee hour of the evening on 19 May 09. It was raining like cat and dog. My head spins like unsettled gyro gymbal trying to find the corrected magnetic error getting set into the north south cardinal. KL to Tawau took 5 gruelling hours, what a ride!

Next day, after breakfast its a helicopter ride to Semporna. Very sunny day and I look forward for a good tour around the Sabah water limits and its surrounding islands. Preceding the island tour, was a quick briefing by the authority. Next I boarded the fast boat to our first destination, Timba island. What can I say about this short boat trip. Back like good old days in the 80s where I was patrolling this same water against any illegal entry from other countries - the usual water/land borders problems around the world. This fast boat was cruising at about 30 kts avoiding too close to coral areas and small fishing boats enroute. We arrived Timba island just in time for lunch. In fact we were slightly late as others who opted to fly from Semporna were waiting for us.

Timba island is small and surrounded by shallow water covering the beach area which is whitish turning light green colour water with a sudden drop into the deep marked by black colored water.

Join the Navy and see the world! The famous words I used to hear from the mouth of many travellers during my younger days. I think there is truth in the saying, though many may differ. The next best way to travel the world is perhap the traditional way - by sea. How do I do that? Well, I am not talking about the Azhar Mansor type but a combination of work and travel - Merchant ship. There is a chance to do this even after my retirement. First I must register myself as a Seaman under Marine departmen, Ministry of Transport. With this I can enrol to attend modular courses to obtain the Standard of Watchkeeping, Training and Certificate 95 (SWTC 95). I wish to attend this course with PELITA AKADEMI SDN BHD, Kuala Kubu Bahru. One can also apply to take this course in other countries. Second, appilication to work with shipping companies. Easy? NO. There are various stages of the SWTC categories and its time consuming but not impossible if you really want to do. Nah! Another option to travel the world isn't it?

RTW Preparation...continues. This time I want to talk about Route Planner issues. Taking the first country, India as my initial discussion. India,is a big country. Very colourful and lots of history. After checking with friends in the IndiaMike.com and other sites, I am interested to follow the following route through India: Chennai - Hyderabad,Andra Pradesh - Nizamabad - Adilbad - Nagpur - Sagar - Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh - Dabra - Gwalior - Morena - Dhaulpur - Agra - Mathura - Faridabad - New Delhi, Delhi - Panipat - Karnal - Ambala - Ludhiana - Jalandhar - Amritsar, Punjab. A total distance of more than 2000km and my estimate is to cover within 4 weeks with a budget of RM 10K or less.
Cross-border between Wagah to Lahore, Pakistan is currently closed. So? I bang on my luck this would be solved by the time I reach there ( mid 2012). Or, have to start thinking of another route. The Silk Road comes to mind. Now, this is going to be a lot more exciting (as though crossing India is not tough enough?). I expect following the Silk Road crossing China and entering Europe via Kazakhstan - Kyrgyzstan - Tajikstan - Uzbeksitan -Turkmenistan - Iran would consume both time and fund.
Meanwhile, the other physical preparation gets underway as well. Getting physically fit, start to brisk walk everyday for about 1 hr in the afternoon. Depending on my progress, I may gradually increase the tempo by swimming daily later. I was talking to my riding mate (Mr Big) about camping preparation. We would try camping in our next ride. Talking about camping, my last camping early this year by a lakeside did not go very well. I had to break camp in the middle of the nite because of very heavy rain and thunderous weather. What a failure that was.

Main Range Loop Ride

7 and 8 March 2008
The route is simple enough; Kuala Lumpur towards the main range of Peninsular Malaysia and stop over to Kota Bahru, Kelantan state and return crossing the main range from East to West passing the Banding Lake straight to Pangkor Island overnight and return to Kuala Lumpur via the North South Highway. The journey took me some 11 hours of riding time, 1235km distance covered and just under Ringgit 65 for fuel. Solo riding is fun but lonely. It was wet run throughout. Camel (my bike KLR 650) behaved well and no trouble with her. The best part of the journey is to stop at few site along the East - West highway between the town of Jeli in Kelantan and Grik in Perak.
While this is merely another drill but breaking any record is not part of the ride. It is a Look See Look See riding type. More of this ride in future.

A short break in Sarah's house in Netherland for maintenance and general service for the bike. This will also allow time to regenarate energy and 'walk-about' Netherland and its neighbouring countries on different mode of transportation (bus and train). It would be an opportunity to visit place I have lived once upon a time in Hamburg, Germany ( Wohldorfer Damm 76, 22395 Bergstedt, Hamburg). Few Malaysians who lived in Hamburg for past 40 odd years worthwhile visiting. Pak Zaki, Ismail and Gaby, Dino and many more. Not forgetting it is time also to meet Angelika Driesel at Heiddick 7A, 22395 Hamburg. It is like giving them a very big surprises!
I would say I plan to stay at anchor in Sarah's house for about 2 - 3 weeks during which time I will moving about before moving to next destination - the UK.

RTW

Preparation

1. This is my personal experience in preparing for the RTW trip. As usual, making any preparation in between your current work is challenging. There are times when you have to meet people or do research on particulars RTW issues ended up in postponement giving way to your work which is of higher priority. I recalled in mid- 2003, when the urge of riding again is ‘hot’, I did not have a clear mind about RTW preparation. From 2004 till mid 2007 no progress in the preparation still. Work, work and work. Then in 2008, I started to be serious in this whole idea of going RTW trip although my job comes first.

2. I think you need time to make any serious preparation for the trip. So, if you are still working keep your work on high priority. Otherwise you makan gaji buta (not working). Some would require 6 months solid preparation but for me, I like to get started early as I needed more time. I plan 2012 for the RTW. Why? I will be retiring from my current job in 2010 therefore the issue of time is solved and from now till 2012 give me enough time (I think) to come up with the budget required.

Budget

3. My previous job as Assistant Chief of Staff for Plans and Operation in the Naval HQ, Ministry of Defence has taught me “ talk money first then plan what you can do with it” makes sense to start the planning with budget first. No money no trip concept.

4. Let me start with the easy item first – the bike. I intend to make the trip by riding my own bike. There are many ways to RTW but nothing more satisfaction then riding your own bike be it a typical 50cc Honda or a well-equipped and high tech adventure BMW. In 2003 I bought a used Kawasaki ZX10 at RM 16K. Man! This bike is so powerful. Anything above 250 km/h is a piece of cake. The down side- heavy. Thus only owned her for about 6 months. Then I opted to buy a used Honda ST1100 at RM40K. Superb tourer and as good as any 50 cc Honda to maintain but again too heavy for my midget size. I rode her to Phuket, Thailand which happened to be very comfortable and reliable. Later I disowned the ST and bought BMW R1100RS 1994 model at RM38K hoping this would be the right choice for the RTW. A BMW is a BMW. Expensive to maintain but a wonderful piece of machine. Never regret owning a BMW if cost is not your problem. However, later I found it is not the bike I want to RTW mainly because it is still too heavy for me and cost factor. Finally, I bought a Kawasaki KLR 650 model 2008 in October 2008. It costs me RM 39,000 on the road. If you are looking for speed this is not the bike but if you want to adventure the world in 50-50 paved and off-road with a 187 kilos of load, then take a test ride of the KLR. My bike, which I called Camel has clocked 7000kms now.

5. Daily Travel Expenses (DTE).
Based on the opinion made by the community in the Horizons Unlimited and taking EU rate of USD$100 per day (which is on the high side), the following DTE is considered:

Food- Euro 15.00
Lodging- Euro 50.00
Fuel at Euro1.10/lit - Euro 30.00

Sub-total DTE… rate at RM4.3 = 1Euro RM 408.50

Above figure is my rough estimate only and it sounds on the high side making sure enough budget to cover the trip.

Durations

I expect the DTE would be sufficient for duration of 6 to 9 months going on a shoe-string budget. Few factors come to my mind when the question of duration pops up. First, the budget is extremely important. The more you have not necessarily you can stay longer in a place. But there is likely hood you can afford to stay longer or get out of difficulties. Second, Western Europe, the US and Canada are expensive countries especially lodging. Perhaps there are more reasons to go to places where you have not been as this is going to be once in a life time trip. And maybe I want to spend more time in that kind of places. There is also other good reason to break journey in Europe, park your bike somewhere and return sometimes later to continue the RTW. By way of convenient, I am going select the Netherland to be my anchorage place. Why? I have my family member there. Third, I want to transit India as quickly as possible because for India, you either love or hate it. I happen to pick the latter. The country is fabulous but the people and ‘makes people feel stupid’ Indian culture put you off. Sorry, no hard feeling yeah!

The idea to go as far and long as your money takes you is not a bad also. I am exploring this possibility as well. Would 9 months enough to cover the entire RTW route I am taking? No answer on that. It all depends.

However, the general plan I am taking is to opt for 6-9 months ‘out’ and 6-9 months ‘in’. That is, for the equal period ‘in’ or ‘out’ of Malaysia. To give a general idea, I may first be ‘out’ of Malaysia for that duration, leave the bike somewhere, return home. Come back later and continue the remaining trip. For now, I am looking for the Msia to Europe through India, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey and into Europe trip first. Leave the bike in Europe. Then continue Europe - South America – New Zealand- Indonesia and Msia. Expected problem - Carnet only can be issued to a vehicle twice in the vehicle life-span. Each issuance valid for a year only though we heard there is chance to extend that period but have not heard anyone in Malaysia have done that. Will need to check on this. I wonder how Goh and Mah (Singapore Dream) managed to ride on a bike which have passed a year outside the carnet validity. Have to ask Goh.

Another possible option is to buy a bike in Europe and park it there ready for next trip. This option is much more attractive considering the fact that the budget to ship bike from Malaysia is considerably expensive and cost of carnet inclusive.

At time of writing, Camel experiences electrical problem. On one of my weekend trip (14 Feb 09) to Perak after stopping at Kuala Kubu Baru for fueling, Camel could not start. There was no electrical power; nothing on the cockpit meters. I thought it must be the side-stand switch failure but discard this as there was complete no power. I opened the User Hand Book and search for the page regarding Engine Cannot Start column. One of the possible problem indicates main fuse blown. So, I opened the cover for the starter relay where the main fuse is located and found out that the 20 Amp main fuse blown. After changing the fuse, put the switch to On and power restored but when push the starter button to start the engine the main fuse blew and total power failure again. Upon consultation via telephone with a mechanic in Kuala Lumpur he instructed me to by-pass the starter button. This is how it is done; Switch position to Off, change the main fuse and put the switch position to On, then with a plier connect the positive and negative points of the starter relay (the relay housed the main fuse). Once the engine runs quickly disengage the plier from the starter relay. The engine will run and you can ride provided that you do not switch Off the engine or else you have to repeat the sequence to start the engine. When we arrived at the workshop, the mechanic assumed the starter relay is defective. But upon checking and starting the engine everything runs normal! I was total puzzled. Why hasn’t the fuse blows when the start button is press? Now you have, now you don’t. What the mechanic did then was to replace the main fuse from 20 Amps to 30 amps. Satisfied that it could be the fuse defective, I continue my journey to Perak without further problem. I thought that fix everything. I am happy. Not so. When I reached my destination in Perak, something else crop-up. When I put the switch to On and push the start button to start the engine nothing happened. I found out that the start button did not functioned, so I had to by-pass the start button again and return to KL. I managed to arrive the workshop in KL and asked to sort out the defect as the bike is still under warranty.

On 21 Feb 09, I took the bike from the workshop after the entire right hand switches was replaced brand new (I was told this). This time I wanted to ride the Mersing –Gemas route. Towards the end of the day ride, the similar defect occur – the start button fails and I have to by-pass the start button using the same technique described earlier. Now, I tend to believe that there is a short circuit in the electrical wiring harness as notified to me by the KLR Forum. The bike is in the Kawasaki Dealer workshop now for repair. Hope they find the root cause of the defect. I rang the Kawasaki Dealer to ask about the bike status. I was told that, the wiring harness is OK but the battery water is empty and the starter button spring misaligned. They got it fix up and as far as the Dealer is concerned the bike is OK now. I am doubtful they did a thorough check at all. Bloody fool

Planned Route

Msia – India. There is high probability to fly the bike to India because it is faster and less troublesome. From the knowledge I gather, air freighters are very familiar to ship small and high value/dangerous goods. It is ‘cheaper’ when compared to sea shipment taking into consideration all the administrative difficulties you have to undergo. Target port is Chennai or New Delhi. MAS aircrafts fly to these airports.

India. Chennai – Hyderabad – Indore – Agra – New Delhi (or in the case start at New Delhi, then spare few days to cover Indore – Agra and back to New Delhi). New Delhi – Rohtak – Jullundur – Amristar (cross –border to Pakistan at Lahore; Amristar – Lahore on Route #1

Pakistan. Lahore – Sahiwal – Multan – Dera Ghazi Khan _ Quetta (cross-border to Iran at Taftan)

Iran. Taftan – Zahedan – Bam – Kerman Yazd – Esfahan – Qom – Tehran – Qazvin – Zanjan – Tabriz – Khoy – Maku (cross-border to Turkey at Dogubeyazit on route #E80/D100

Turkey. Diyadin – Erzurum – Istanbul – more to follow on the next destination which is under development at time of writing.

Butt Ride Part II

First, a belated Happy New Year 2009 to you. Pray for a better year. Butt Ride Part II is scheduled to cover the Northern coastal roads and part of the Main Range of Peninsular Malaysia. 3 riders and 3 different bikes. We gathered at Kuala Selangor (the old site for the Selangor Sultanate kingdom). Riding through Tg Karang, Sabak Bernam and Kayan saw padi fields, coconuts and oil palms plantation. Very cool and overcast weather."Restoren Asam Pedas at Kamunting. Phooo! It is just delicious. For drink it is air ambra and asam bo (another kick fruits drink). The lunch cost RM38. Boy! You should try.

P.Malaysia's Main Range Ride

2 bikes 2 riders. Me and Radzi (Mr Big). We started from KL on 6 Dec 08 morning after typical breakfast (boiled eggs, bread and kopi; sorry no nasi lemak cos bad diet for riding). Our initial route will take us KL-Temerloh-Jerantut-K Lipis-Gua Musang-Gerik. Overnite Gerik then upward to Baling-K.Nerang-Alor Star-Kangar- and downward to Butterworth- K.Kangsar- Parit-Tk.Intan-Sabak Bernam-K.Selangor-Rawang-KL. My estimate the total journey would cover almost 2000km.
KL to Temerloh was not interesting. Too much heavy traffics and just the Karak Highway ride. Rain started as we passed Karak and throughout the day ride. Raincoat? Forget it riding in this type of rainy season. It just keep on pouring over you. Temerloh is a nice small town. Jerantut is confusing, many turns and one-way. We had to tour Jerantut twice before we managed to get out to correct road towards K. Lipis. K.Lipis to Gua Musang is very nice road though many turns and with wet road and some passing palm oil plantations and refineries can be dangerous. No fast cornering Babes! Since the Raya Haji falls on 8 Dec 08, the traffic flowing North was heavy. Stream of cars. No choice but to overtake them, some on double lanes. Ooop! sorry guys.
At Gua Musang after lunch we decided to ride to C.Highland instead of Gerik but due to my own stupidity of miscalculate Camel fuel consumption I found that Camel would run dry before we could arrive C.Highland. So, we have to about turn towards Gua Musang to fuel Camel. Blessing in disguise, after calculation we decide to stick to our original plan to head for Gerik through Jeli. Jeli to Gerik was like navigating ship in darkness without radar! Visibility was restricted due to thick fog and dark road. Boy! Like riding from Monaco to La Spezia, if you know what I mean. We arrived Gerik around 9pm. Soak wet and hungry only to find the Gerik rest house restaurant did not served dinner. Reason, no water! We had to instruct the waitress to tell the cook how to prepare sandwich and scramble eggs. I think I annoyed the cook. He came out and sat at the counter staring at us. Hungry man angry man, right? We finally settled down for the nite feeling disappointed about the service at the rest house. However, we slept like log. Zzzzzzzz
7 Dec 08. We decided to cut short our tour due to last minute commitment. So we headed straight to Perak via K Kangsar - Parit. We disengaged at Bota Kiri; Mr Big drove to Tk Intan while I went to Sitiawan. I rode to KL alone on 9 Dec 08. The rain still pouring through out the KL ride.

Mindanao Travel - Lake Sebu

There are few lakes in Mindanao, the biggest is Lake Lanao. Lake Sebu is located in the Province of South Cotabato, some 100 odd km from Cotabato. A good place to relax and enjoy the cool and green surroundings. The best part is, the fresh water Tilapia is yummy cooked in the traditional "Lumad" (Indigenous people) style. There are many small resorts that provide typical lake activities.

Kawasaki KLR 650 (Camel)

Bought Camel on Oct 9, 2008. Over that weekend I drove Camel covering 1600km, thus completed the engine breaking-in as recommended by the User's Manual. Phoow! Even Kapchai and Municipal Lorries overtook me. My thought was, at least Camel is ready now for more 'punishing jobs'. I have to temporary say Bye to Camel on Oct 20, 2008 as I parked him at Ah Kit's shop at Jln Kuchai Lama for safe keeping for another two and a half months while I am gone to continue my duty in Mindanao, the Philippines.
There is only few words to describe Camel during that breaking-in run - Awesome machine.

Mindanao pointers

On average, it is best to have 2 weeks to cover Mindanao. Whether you start from Zamboanga or Davao as entry and exit point there are places where you need to pass as quickly as possible or stay a little bit longer. I always feel excited to ferry your own bike from Sandakan to Zamboanga. The overnite trip is not so much happening. From Zomboanga you can ride to Pagadian some 300km distance apart. Pagadian is like Los Angeles , very undulating town. No wonder they improvised the tricycles in an inverted fashion. Very fun to ride one of them. Cheap cheap.

During the Monsoon season or when each passing typhoons (about 21 times a year), the road linking Zamboanga to Pagadian can be obstructed by landslides or collapse. Beware to make a detour or even long wait (common).

Road Zamboanga to Pagadian is mixed (part concrete and disconnected by gravel). You may wonder why? Done on purpose? Your guess is good as mine. So be careful not too excited with long straight road as you may suddenly hit gravel and pot holes. Go slow Brother! That my advise.

6 Oct 2008 - Mindanao Travel

Mindanao is a nice island, forget about the conflict which dragged the island 5-10 years backward in term of development and infrastructure. I lived and work in Cotabato for the past 13 months and I found home here. There are varied places and cultures to visit. For Malaysian travellers, the easiest entry point to Mindanao, aside from Manila, is Zamboanga city. There are regular overnight ferry services plying Sandakan to Zamboanga (to and fro). You can ferry your bike or car together.
Some tips when riding in Mindanao or the Philippines in general:
1. There is no traffic rules in practical terms
2. Most drivers owned their licenses through 'purchase' and no formal driving lessons
3. Horn is a must
4. You do not know when somebody going to turn or stop, regardless of others
5. Beware of tricycles and pedestrians - they rule
6. They give way if you persist
7. Road signs are meant just to be there

Ride a bike tour

This is the beginning of a life adventure for me. Still unsure why I am doing this but reading from many around the world who have done the RTW and other motorcycle touring, I am inspired

I do not have any experience riding a motorcycle outside Malaysia other than a short trip to Phuket few years ago. However have been riding since 1977 with a few years of lay off because of work commitments. The HU website comes real handy and useful for me to use as a reference manual ( some say 'Bible' and must read for potential motorcycle adventurers).

Thats a quick introduction of my adventure.
